The Faculty of Physics was established in 1978 and is one of the leading faculties of physics in the Southern Urals.

The Faculty is one of the leaders among grant recipients. Students' work in the field of innovations granted federal funding from the Foundation for Assistance to Enterprises in Science and Technology under the Government of the Russian Federation for 5 student projects under the U.M.N.I.K. programme for the amount of 2 million rubles. Every year students of the Faculty of Physics become winners of prizes and grants of the Governor of the Chelyabinsk Region, the Legislative Assembly of the Chelyabinsk Region, the Mayor of Chelyabinsk, the Dynasty Foundation and other grant-forming organisations. The Faculty is one of the two partners of the Interuniversity Medical and Physical Centre, where effective laser medical technologies are being developed and introduced into clinical practice. Students, taking part in scientific research, get an extremely promising and in-demand specialisation in medical physics. The future lies in high technologies and innovations. The Government of the Russian Federation allocates unprecedented funds for the development of this area.
The Faculty is a leader in innovative research and development. Every year scientific research is supported by Russian and international leading grant-forming organisations. Students, postgraduates and staff of the Faculty actively participate in international conferences on various problems of fundamental and applied physics. The developments of the Faculty scientists have been repeatedly awarded Grand Prix, medals and diplomas of the Regional Salon of Innovations and Investments, gold medals of the Euro-Asian Forum of Innovations and Investments ‘Invest ProjectExpo’ (Ekaterinburg), gold, silver and bronze medals of the All-Russian Exhibition Centre (Moscow), special diplomas of the International Exhibition of High Technologies China Hi-Tech Fair (China). Active involvement of students in scientific research has made it possible to obtain not only high-quality fundamental education, but also highly paid jobs in the field of high technologies.
